Edin to the World Cup? Bosnia maintain 100% Record

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s hopes of qualifying for their second ever FIFA World Cup (WC) grew following a dominant 6-0 victory over perennial underdogs San Marino at the Stadio Olimpico di Serravalle.
There was no doubt that San Marino went into this game as massive underdogs but they did themselves no favours early on. The hosts were reduced to 10 men after only 17 minutes played when skipper Alessandro Golinucci was sent off for denying the visitors a clear goalscoring opportunity. It took Bosnia and Herzegovina just four minutes to take full advantage of the extra man when Benjamin Tahirović’s speculative effort from outside the penalty area found its way past Edoardo Colombo and into the back of the net. Despite having 69% of the ball in the first half, Sergej Barbarez’s side were unable to add to their goal tally before the interval.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s record goalscorer Edin Džeko came extremely close to doubling his country’s lead within the opening five minutes of the second half, when his header from six yards out rattled off the bar. The 39 year-old veteran striker made no mistake though in the 70th minute as he tapped home from just a few yards out following a smart pass across the face of goal from Amar Memić. With the hosts defence visibly tiring, Džeko ruthlessly notched another goal two minutes later when his curling effort from just outside the penalty area secured his 70th goal for his nation.
With the game already over as a contest in the 81st minute, a defensive mishap allowed Samed Baždar to round the goalkeeper and record his first ever international goal at senior level. The visitors were simply ruthless at this stage and made it 5-0 shortly afterwards when 17 year-old debutant Kerim Alajbegović rifled the ball home from close range. The icing on the cake arrived in the 90th minute when Nihad Mujakic steered the ball past Colombo to notch his nation’s sixth goal of the evening.
The Dragons have now secured four victories from their opening four games in the UEFA qualifying section, which sets up their crunch game at home against Austria on Tuesday very nicely indeed. For San Marino, their long wait for a first ever World Cup qualifier victory continues.
